Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the use of computer systems to simulate human processes. Generative AI is a form of artificial intelligence that uses machine learning models to produce content in various forms, including text, images, sounds, animations, and other types of data. Often, content is generated in response to prompts. One of the most popular generative AI platforms is ChatGPT.

Generative AI in Higher Education

Generative AI is a new and rapidly evolving tool that is expanding possibilities for its use while also generating concerns. In the higher education realm, concerns relate to academic integrity, ethics, access, and bias.

Emory’s Honor Council has created an information sheet to address academic integrity concerns. It is important to clearly state whether any use of AI is permitted or not. The Honor Council has drafted suggested language for the syllabus and assignments when AI is not allowed:

Using an artificial intelligence program to generate any content for any assignment in this course (including, but not limited to examinations, papers, homework, and creative work) constitutes plagiarism and is a violation of the Honor Code. The use of an artificial intelligence program in this course without permission from the instructor may also constitute seeking unauthorized assistance or violate other provisions of the Honor Code. Any suspicion of academic misconduct will be reported to the Honor Council.

If permitting the use of AI, consider the following:

  • Generate responses to your own assignments to see what an AI response might look like.
  • Be very clear about your expectations for when students can use it and when they cannot.
  • Ask students to submit work generated by AI and demonstrate how they edited or adapted it. Have students turn in the original AI generated work along with their edited work.
